Motorized vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance activities have the potential to contribute directly to storm drain systems primarily through spills or the dumping of waste fluids being conveyed to the storm drain. Fluids, such as oils, greases, and solvents, are hydrocarbon based, and may contain metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and other toxic compounds. Removal of caked dirt and grime from motorized vehicles and equipment increases the sediment load to the storm drain system. Pollution prevention activities are used to prevent spills from occurring in locations where runoff will carry the spill to the storm drain. Source control activities are performed to remove spills from areas where runoff may carry the spill to the storm drain.
BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (BMPs)
-
Perform automobile repair and maintenance under a covered area. Do not perform repair and maintenance activities during rain events.
-
Immediately clean up and contain any release of fluids. Use cat litter or another absorbent to absorb any spills, sweep up and dispose of properly.
-
Store hazardous materials and wastes (including, but not limited to, fluids, solvents, parts containing fluids, batteries) indoors, under cover & in watertight containers.
-
Perform maintenance and repairs on impervious surfaces such as concrete so that spills and other wastes deposited on the ground can be readily cleaned up.
-
Use drip pans, plastic sheeting, or equivalent to contain spills and prevent waste material from reaching storm drains.
-
Clean tools and parts in contained areas that do not drain to storm drains.
-
Do not wash down maintenance and repair areas, instead clean them using "dry cleaning" methods such as using a broom, towel or shop vac, if applicable. Use mops as a last resort.
-
Recycle used oil and antifreeze by taking them to service stations and other recycling centers. Never pour oil in storm drains or areas draining to the storm drain.
