Application for Handgun License, Indiana State Police

Fees

As of July 1, 2021, individuals seeking a Lifetime Personal Protection license or a Five-Year Personal Protection license will only incur fees for electronic fingerprinting.

Electronic Fingerprinting

After completing the online application and before leaving the Indiana State Police (ISP) website, please schedule an appointment to be electronically fingerprinted. The Noblesville Police Department cannot provide fingerprinting for handgun licenses. You must schedule your appointment through ISP. There are a number of locations for you to select from. You will incur a fee at the fingerprinting location.

Local Background Check

After completing the ISP online application and your electronic fingerprinting, residents within Noblesville city limits should complete this on-line form. Your local background check will be completed utilizing information from this form and from your ISP application. The Noblesville Police Department will contact you by email once your background check has been completed and your application has been approved by the Noblesville Chief of Police. This usually takes two-to-three weeks from the time we receive your information. Please check your junk and spam folders if more than three weeks have passed. Once your application is approved, you will need to complete a form at the Noblesville Police Department. You will be asked to show a current driver’s license or identification  card at that time. Your approval will then be transmitted to ISP, and they will mail your license directly to the address listed on your application in approximately six-to-eight weeks.

If you reside  outside of Noblesville’s city limits, you will need to contact the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department or your local police department to complete your application process.

Please note: You must complete your fingerprinting and local background check within 90 days of submitting your online ISP application. Any application left inactive more than 90 days from the  initial online application date may be purged from the ISP system, and the application process will have to be restarted.

GENERAL FINGERPRINTING AND LIMITED BACKGROUND CHECKS

** Effective May 25, 2021, the Noblesville Police Department will be conducting fingerprinting services on Tuesdays from 11:00am to 1:00pm and Thursdays from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. **

The Noblesville Police Department will fingerprint and perform limited background checks for citizens that reside within the Noblesville city limits.  If you reside outside city limits or require a more extensive background check, please contact the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department or the Indiana State Police.  You will need to provide a valid ID or other proof of residency when requesting these services.  Fingerprinting can take some time, so we request that you call ahead to schedule an appointment whenever possible.  Click on the link below to fill out a Criminal Check Release Form.  These services are provided at no cost as a courtesy to our citizens.

When coming to the police department for fingerprinting, masks will be required during the fingerprinting process.  If you don't have one, a mask will be provided.
